Position Scope
Volunteer Staff (VS)/Student Volunteers (SV) provides assistance and care in a safe and effective manner. The job description of a VS/SV involves patience, empathy, strong interpersonal skills, and a detailed knowledge of best care practices.
Education and Experience
A VS shall hold a high school diploma, certification as a Nurse’s Aide or Nursing Assistant, or Nurse licensure. VS is also required to successfully complete a training program.
At least 18 years of age, but shall also be at least three years older than all clients under the age of 18
A minimum of two years of experience working with clients of the population served, be equivalently qualified by education in the human services field, or have a combination of work experience and education with one year of education substituting for one year of experience
Not have a finding on the Louisiana State Nurse Aide Registry and the Louisiana Direct Service Worker Registry against him/her
VS/SVs are supervised to protect clients and staff

Student Volunteers:
Have current registration with the applicable Louisiana professional board, when required, and is in good standing at all times that is verified by the provider
Actively pursuing a degree in a human service field or professional level licensure or certification at all times

Visual/hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written/verbal communication
Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, which may include heavy lifting, pushing pulling, extensive bending, and standing

Performance Responsibilities and Standards
Volunteer Staff (VS) provide assistance and support to the clients who are not able or need assistance.
Responsibilities:
SV responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Service as a supplement to the staff but will not provide direct care services to the clients
Provides care only under the direct supervision of the appropriate supervisor
Provides only those services for which the student has been trained and deemed competent to perform
The responsibilities of VS/SV include, but are not limited to:
Completing the required program orientation and training, and demonstrating competency prior to being assigned to direct care
Having a clear understanding of the treatment plan
Assisting clients in developing social, recreational, and other independent living skills as appropriate
Being aware of safety issues and providing safety intervention within the milieu
Reporting all crisis or emergency situations to the supervisor or his/her designee in the absence of the supervisor
Understanding the program philosophy regarding behavior management and applying this philosophy in daily interactions with clients in SNH care
Having the ability to effectively implement de-escalation techniques.

Manage day to day activities and assist with scheduling appointments.
Increased level of independence by providing daily undertakings that promote self-management.
Developed relationship to build trust and execute developmental and operational activities.
II. Responsible for fiscal and facility management assisted with weekly time sheets and scheduling of staff members.
Clock in and clock out time
Document accurate and timely information
Ensure that daily activities are conducted consistent with the approved program schedule and documented as they occur; confirm approval of any changes to the schedule for the special events or activities with program managers in advance and with proper communication of these changes.
Ensure that all program issues and incidents are identified, addressed, communicated, and documented.
Assist with checking the client’s benefits

V. Quality and Safety
Every employee is responsible for sharing concerns and completing the Employee Grievance form, if needed.
Every employee is responsible for reporting all safety concerns and complete the incident reportReporting incidents of abuse, neglect and misappropriation to the Administrator and/or Designee.
Required to sign a written confidentially agreement
VI. Emergency Plan
In the event of an emergency, the volunteer/student shall be permitted to do everything possible in which they were trained.
All volunteers must report to the Incident Command Center for instructions.
Prior to assigning a volunteer that holds a licensure, the Administrator and/or designee with verify their credentials and train them on their responsibilities.
Volunteers will be providing a tag or badge that states they are a volunteer along with their name.
Each volunteer name, demographic information, certification/licensure number and volunteer hours will be documented on the Volunteer Staff Registration form.
Volunteers will be allowed to participate in the debriefing after full recovery of services.
If the Volunteer Staff member holds a certification or licensure, the Administrator or Designee will verify the information as soon as possible. In the event, we are unable to verify the credentials, we will document each time the attempt was made.
Education/Inservices/Orientation
Plans and organizes orientation and in-service training for staff members and participates in guidance and educational programs.
Direct, supervise and evaluate work activities of staff
Oriented to the facility, job duties, and other pertinent information
Trained to meet requirements of duties assigned
Given written job description or written agreement
Computer
Must excel in computer use to include, but not limited to, word, excel and email as well as other forms of communication through technology.
